Basic brush maps: improve your brush playing

Brushes are the aristocracy of drumming. They belong to the Glory Days of Buddy (Rich), Philly (Joe Jones), Gene (Krupa), Jack (De Johnette) but we were wrong thinking of it as a gadget for snob drummers. Listen Clayton (Cameron) or Jojo (Mayer) or Peter (Erskine) to understand how much stuff you can do with them.

Brushes need, as sticks, daily practice. If you (and neither your drums’ teacher) have no idea how to practice with brushes, simply start from basics: practice rudiments with brushes as you do with sticks. You can do no wrong, starting from basics. The surf the net, youtubeing and find some stuff to copy. (Then, possibly, find another drums’ teacher).

A fundamental part of brush tecnique are hand movements on the drumhead, so brush maps are a good way to start practicing. Download this pdf file from Prologix site: Basic Brush Maps, Tools To Improve Your Brush Playing by Jason Edwards. It’s a Modern Drummer stuff reprinted, contains drumhead maps and is a good start for understanding how to move brushes on drum, playing different style
